ABOUT

Our publication, En El Frente ("On The Front"), serves as a framework for the research of Alexandria Canchola and Joshua Duttweiler. Emulating the front pages of historic independent Chicano publications, we aim to engage and educate readers about the editorial design choices and impact made by Chicano activists and designers, connecting the work to contemporary designers advocating for similar concerns.

To undertake this research, we visited the archives at universities in Texas and California. These states were important centers for organizations involved in the Chicano movement and its activism during that time. Analyzing the graphic design, themes, and aesthetics of these publications provides valuable insights and expands the historical canon to include the work of Chicano designers and authors. This research project is part of a broader effort to document and understand the contributions of marginalized communities in graphic design, similar to other contemporary projects like Gráfica Latina and The People's Graphic Design Archive.
